Proteus partnered with TLT to provide strategic guidance and input on how to structure a pilot offering their Life Orientation curriculum across 48 schools. Proteus developed a rigorous monitoring and evaluation framework to measure impact, improve the product and establish credibility. The goal is to use data and learnings in the next 5 years to partner with government and scale to a national level. As part of the process, Proteus led TLT in a review of their organisational theory of change, and reviewed certain aspects of organisational health and culture in order to ensure efficient and effective operations.
Tomorrow’s Leaders in Training (TLT) exists to equip young people with practical skills to navigate daily pressures and to empower them to understand their own identity and recognise their inherent potential. TLT aims to INSPIRE, ENQUIRE, and ENQUIP by creating ‘brave spaces’ for teenagers to be heard, to be mentored and to tackle tough topics.
TLT recently received permission from the Gauteng, Western Cape and KZN departments of education to pilot their Life Orientation curriculum and model for enquiry-based and facilitated dialogical teaching and learning, across schools in each province. This year, they will be piloting this model across 48 schools with the intention that in the next 5 years they will have the necessary learnings and data to go national.
In order to effectively scale the initiative, TLT needed to identify a clear theory of change, map out the key features and relationships between their programmatic offerings, and identify indicators for success. This all needed to be underpinned by a robust monitoring and evaluation framework that would measure their outcomes and provide valuable data for the iteration and adapation of their programmes.
TLT partnered with Proteus to develop the theory of change, clarify the programmatic offerings and their interdependencies and causal pathways, and develop a robust monitoring and evaluation framework.
We took TLT through a rigorous process, including a theory of change workshop where we developed a vision statement, strategic objectives and levers for change. We followed this with risk analysis, and stakeholder mapping to ensure a comprehensive overview and understanding of the landscape and inherent challenges. With the problem, risks and vision of success clarified, Proteus worked together with TLT to map the inputs, outputs and outcomes for each of their programmatic offerings. This framework was supported with a pragmatic implementation plan, and robust monitoring and evaluation framework that monitors progress, informs programmatic changes and builds the case for adoption and scale.
The team at TLT have the full suite of tools required for success, as they pilot their programmes across 48 schools in three provinces. Proteus will be available to continue to monitor progress and offer support as TLT implements, monitors, iterates, adapts and scales their initiative across South Africa.
