IPASA: Rapid Synthesis on Teacher Development in South Africa

Proteus Advisory partnered with the Independent Philanthropy Association of South Africa (IPASA) to conduct a rapid synthesis of teacher development initiatives, focusing on foundational literacy and numeracy in early grades (Grade R-3). This project aims to enhance coordination among funders and optimize the impact of these crucial programs.

The Challenge

South Africa’s education system faces significant challenges in teacher development, particularly in the early grades. Despite numerous initiatives, a lack of alignment among funders and programs leads to inefficiencies and missed opportunities for scaling successful interventions.

What We Did

To address this, Proteus Advisory undertook a comprehensive review of existing teacher development initiatives, mapped key stakeholders, and identified critical gaps that require additional support. The goal was to provide actionable insights to IPASA that would guide more effective coordination and funding strategies.

  • Conducted extensive desk-top research on teacher development initiatives.
  • Mapped key stakeholders and current initiatives in foundational literacy and numeracy.
  • Identified gaps and opportunities for enhanced coordination among funders.
  • Developed a high-level summary report with visual mappings and strategic recommendations.
  • Facilitated a workshop to engage funders in discussions on improving alignment and impact.

What Next?

Proteus Advisory will continue to support IPASA by fostering ongoing dialogue among funders and stakeholders. We will also provide strategic advice to enhance the effectiveness and reach of teacher development programs across South Africa.
