Thrive Education: Developing innovative approaches for school improvement at scale

Proteus Advisory undertook a comprehensive review of the Thriveway Accreditation Framework on behalf of Thrive Education. The purpose of this review was to assess the efficacy and potential impact of a new approach to school improvement. Over the next few months, Proteus will be working together with the Executives, school leaders and management teams to pilot the implementation of this innovative model of school improvement.

The challenge

Thrive Education currently partners with 6 schools across Gauteng and is looking to partner with more schools in Gauteng and the Western Cape in the next few years. As the organisation grows, they are looking to ensure that there is consistency across all schools in delivering an excellent education that allows all children to thrive – without stifling autonomy and innovation. The proposed solution, the Thriveway Accreditation Framework – an innovative, module based approach to data driven, evidence based school self evaluation and school improvement.

Proteus Advisory was approached by Thrive Education to conduct a review of the Thriveway Accreditation Framework. The purpose of this review was to assess the suite of documents provided by Thrive Education and determine and the effectiveness of the provided frameworks, as well as whether they were sufficient to empower an accreditor to implement with fidelity.

What we did

Proteus undertook a systematic approach– we conducted a thorough review of the suite of 18 comprehensive documents, before then working through the hypothetical implementation of the framework as one would expect an accreditor to. Through this process, detailed feedback was provided within each document, and then summarised on the Accreditors guide. The summarised feedback was provided in a final report, which included key findings and recommendations to further strengthen the framework. This feedback was delivered in a final consultation session with the Thrive Education management team, clarifying all recommendations and establishing a concrete course of action for effective implementation.

What next?

Thrive Ed revised the framework to include all recommendations from the review. Following these revisions, Proteus have partnered with Thrive Ed to pilot the modules across the 6 schools. Through these pilots, we will:

  • assess school’s self-evaluations,
  • provide training on data collection, analysis, insight and action
  • support schools with the development and implementation of modular school improvement plans
  • monitor, assess, and provide feedback on the implementation of school improvement plans
  • provide iterative feedback on the Thrive Ed framework
